Familiar readings have a special rhythm. We may know what comes next and still discover something new when we listen more closely. For your next reading of a Megillah, choose one small focus and follow it through the text.
Listen for the voice
Pay attention to who is speaking and who is being addressed. Notice when a voice changes, when a question is asked, or when something is left unsaid. Write down the places where you want to pause and listen again.
Choose a thread
You might follow a repeated word, the movement between places, or the way a particular person is described. Keep the focus narrow enough that it helps you notice details rather than distracting you from the whole.
Share an observation
Read a short passage with a partner and compare what each of you noticed. Begin with an observation from the text before offering an interpretation. The conversation can open up questions that neither reader would have found alone.
