Making Time for Regular Tanakh Study

A small, repeatable study routine can give close reading a lasting place in an otherwise busy week. Start with one passage and one question.

A regular study routine does not have to begin with a large commitment. A short passage, a clear time, and a notebook can be enough to create a useful rhythm. The aim is to return attentively, even when the week is busy.

Choose a realistic rhythm

Set aside a time you can usually keep. Decide in advance what you will read so that the first minutes of the session are spent with the text. Start small, then adjust the length as the routine becomes comfortable.

Keep a simple record

Note the passage, one detail you noticed, and one question. These brief notes help you pick up where you left off. They also show how your questions and understanding develop as you return to the text.

Make room to revisit

Occasionally use a session to reread a passage rather than moving forward. Bring your earlier notes and see what you now notice. Progress can mean a more careful reading of a familiar passage as well as reaching a new one.
